17. Bishop Castle

Bishop Castle

Mile marker 12.6, Highway 165

Many travelers are surprised to find a castle complete with a fire-breathing dragon high in the Colorado mountains. Jim Bishop started  this one-man project in 1969. All of the work has been done with a wheelbarrow and shovel; no heavy equipment other than a truck was used. The castle started out as a stone cabin on private property. Now it is a huge work of art. This free attraction is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round. A gift shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 am- to 6 p.m. Part of all donations goes to a non-profit organization.
